2017 HWPL Peace News in the Kingdom of Cambodia

Here is 2017 Peace News!

HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp in the Kingdom of Cambodia

The Killing Fields is the place where one of the most fatal tragedies of human history occurred within the 20th century. However, from this history involving so much suffering and sadness, an earnest peace movement has sprouted. Over the course of four days, starting at the Wat Ounalom temple in Phnom Penh, and travelling all the way to the Al-Serkal Mosque, the HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp was held.

The participants of the camp numbered over 30 youths and included HWPL youth voulunteers, who hoped to gain deeper insights in the timely role of youth in peacebuilding, Cambodian students, and Buddhist monks from various temples across Cambodia.

These young peacekeepers took their first step together towards the ultimate goal of peace in Cambodia and future global peace through in-depth and sincere discussions and dialogues regarding religion, history, and culture, thus transcending the boundaries and barriers between them.

Day 1 ~ Day 4

Day 1: April 1, 2017, Wat Ounalom, Phnom Penh

On the first day, the camp program was held on the topic of “General History of World Religions” at Wat Ounalom, a Buddhist temple in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Without understanding world religions, it would be difficult to discuss peace. This is why on the first day of the camp, beliefs, practices, and cultures of the world’s major religions were introduced to the participants so that they could better understand each other, who came from different national and religious backgrounds. A guest speaker, Ven. Penh Vibol (Lecturer at Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University and Panna Sastra University of Cambodia), spoke on the topic of “The Importance of Religious Gathering in Religious Peace” and delivered the message that now is the time to not just talk about peace but take action for peace in religion.

 Day 2: April 1, 2017, Al-Serkal Mosque, Phnom Penh

On the second day, the camp program was held on the topic of “Causes of Religious Conflicts & Disputes” at Al-Serkal Mosque. It was quite exceptional for such a program to be held at Al-Serkal Mosque. Tarence Song, one of the organizers of the camp, remarked,

“Opening this religious peace camp for youth was only possible because there was a profound partnership between Buddhism and Islam in Cambodia. Difficulties existed when religious practices must be respected and the mosque as a venue for the camp can be used at the same time. It was the result of a long, trust-based communication in the principle of co-existence and tremendous efforts by the Cambodian organizers.”

The youths, who visited Al-Serkal Mosque to participate in the program, wore hijabs and had time to learn Islamic culture and experience a religion that is not their own. One participant confessed that she was unfamiliar and even frightened to wear the hijab at first, but from discussing and experiencing different religions and their cultures through the camp program, she felt all people are one global family hoping for peace and dialogue is most important in achieving peace.

Day 3-4: April 2, 2017, Picnic Campsite, Kompong Seila

The camp program of the third day took place at a picnic campsite located in Kompong Seila, which is about a three-hour drive from Phnom Penh. On the topic of “Resolution to Religious Conflicts & Disputes and the Religious Community’s Role for Peace,” the participants discussed the current situation of conflicts between religions and ways to resolve them. Although it is a tough challenge facing the international community, the participants approached it from a youth perspective that respects diversity and came up with some innovative and interesting ideas. Regarding the effort to settle religious conflicts, Ven. Ken Horn said,

"Different interpretation of religious scripture can cause conflict. We don't know what the real teaching is. We got lost. We have moved so far from the original. People use their own reasons to interpret differently and claim that it is the words of God. The UN alone is not effective. We have to focus on the local level, especially young people need to take actions for peace."

Appeal For Peace : UN Secretary-General António Guterres is saying

There are still lots of wars, terros
all over the world...
UN New Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres
is trying for world peace

What is he saying?

In his first message on his first day as United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres
appeals to the world for one shared new year resolution - to "put peace first" in the year 2017.

6 April 2017 – United Nations peacekeepers face a raft of challenges – terrorism, hostile host governments, floods of illicit weapons, and sometimes being deployed to places where peace itself is at stake – Secretary-General António Guterres said today, underscoring that all parts of the UN have a role to play in making sure 'blue helmets' can deliver on the mandates assigned to them.

“Peace operations are at a crossroads. Our task is to keep them relevant with clear and achievable mandates, and the right strategies and support,”
“[and] we share a responsibility to adapt them to our changing world.”
“And above all, we look to the [Security] Council for unity, and for clear, achievable mandates,”
“entire peace continuum: from prevention, conflict resolution and peacekeeping to peacebuilding and long-term development.”

“That is our objective for every peacekeeping mission: to do the job entrusted to it. To save lives. To prevent mass atrocities. To set the stage for stability and sustainable peace. And to close. And, from start to finish, to be cost-effective.”
“Success depends on our collective efforts. You can count on my full commitment,”
“But I also count on the unity and support of [the Security] Council, to fulfil its primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security in this changing world.”

Zimbabweans fail to forgive each other   by zimnews.net

Also, I heard good news about
HWPL's trying for peace
in Zimbabwe.

They says
'Peace and reconciliation
is the way to go
if a heritage for future generations
is to be passed on.'

I totally agree with that!
I think
we shoud fight for peace and
make the world brighter
for our generations.

I respect HWPL's thoughts :
Calls for world peace is gaining momentum as...

I think their ideas is the key
to solve past conflicts.

 HWPL says
People world over should take a leaf
from Nelson Mandela's Truth and reconciliation Commission which is similar to what Zimbabwe seeks to do with the National Reconciliation Bill
to deal with past confilicts,
instead of seeking revenge.

The first yearly Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) held on March, 14, when 1800 participants gathered in Seoul for Advocacy of International Law for Peace. Faced with the reality of uncertainty in global cooperation, triggered by a chain of political upheavals from the Brexit to elections in the United States and European states, a new approach to pursue an international peaceful order was discussed.

In commemoration of the DPCW proclaimed on the same date in 2016, the forum reaffirmed the importance of global peace movement currently on progress under the Legislate Peace Campaign to establish the principle of international law for peace through the introduction of a UN resolution based on the DPCW.

Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL emphasized that peace building

“is not an individual task,” but “is relevant to everyone”

as a common purpose of the global community. He offered the role of religion as a bridge builder of peace, rather than the core of conflict and violence by adding

“our orientations must be one for peace. Whether religious, secular world, there is no exception.”

In the progress report, Dong Min Im, the secretary general of HWPL, explained the significance of peace projects in HWPL by saying,

“The work is to put an end to war in our globe and make a foundation of a world of everlasting peace, which is unprecedented in history.”

He continued,

“The solution to peace is all of us becoming messengers of peace.”

Bup Hye Kim, chairman of Buddhist Central Council for National Unification, offered a picture of concrete action plans of HWPL in achieving peace.

“Youth and women are the main scapegoats in war, but even in this reality we must face the fact that youth and women are voluntarily standing at the forefront to build the foundation of peace with HWPL,”

he said.

The LegislatePeace Campaign by HWPL : What for?

http://peacelaw.org/site/legislate_peace_campaign

The #LegislatePeace Campaign is a global peace advocacy movement which aims to bring all wars to an end and enhance a culture of peace by establishing an enforceable law compatible with the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

The strength of the DPCW lies in its representation of the voice of the global citizens yearning for peace, calling on States to protect their rights to enjoy peaceful lives.

Thus, we call on the global community to unite as one to voice our positive demand for peace by adding their signature to the Legislate Peace Campaign.

With this, we call on governments to make and enforce a law based on the principles of the DPCW.

Let us Legislate Peace.

Omani filmmakers parade for peace at Korean event

Muscat -
Two Omani youths attended the prestigious Arirang Performance World Peace Parade which was held recently in Korea.

Organised by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), the event was a meeting point of artists, musicians, social workers, writers and entrepreneurs from around the world.

Sultan Khalfan and Haitham Salim al Maskari were invited to the festival and it was the first time that Oman was represented at the event. The filmmaker duo working with the SME serve-n-knock Productions (snk) brought back with them experiences that will push them both professionally and personally.

Khalfan, CEO of snk said,

“To be in a crowd of 200,000 people from around the world and to interact with people from various nationalities, communities, faiths was something special.

“There were representatives from Syria and Iraq who spoke of atrocities of war. As people who hail from a peaceful country, it was shocking for us to learn about their plight.”

He added that the event would give him a chance to shoot videos which can be used for promotional purposes of world peace.

“It was also a great chance to shoot some good cultural videos and network with like-minded people,”

Khalfan said.

Maskari, a senior coordinator of snk said,

“The main idea of the event was to create awareness on peace and to stop war irrespective of country and community. Everyone was united under one banner to stop war and wanted to send a clear message to the UN.

“It is youth who are suffering in many parts of the world and as youth we must do everything to stop this menace. This was the lesson that we had from the event. More than 50 countries took part.”

IPYG started out as a group of young people in Korea in May 2013 and the main interest was to spread the message of peace around the world.

The purpose of IPYG meeting is to create positive and lasting change internationally through uniting major youth associations around the world.

The organisation invites young people owning SMEs to be part of the event and align with them for future endeavours. Khalfan and Maskari are planning to make short videos on Oman to promote peace.
