Omani filmmakers parade for peace at Korean event

Muscat
Two Omani youths attended the prestigious Arirang Performance World Peace Parade which was held recently in Korea.

Organised by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), the event was a meeting point of artists, musicians, social workers, writers and entrepreneurs from around the world.

Sultan Khalfan and Haitham Salim al Maskari were invited to the festival and it was the first time that Oman was represented at the event. The filmmaker duo working with the SME serve-n-knock Productions (snk) brought back with them experiences that will push them both professionally and personally.

Khalfan, CEO of snk said,

“To be in a crowd of 200,000 people from around the world and to interact with people from various nationalities, communities, faiths was something special.

“There were representatives from Syria and Iraq who spoke of atrocities of war. As people who hail from a peaceful country, it was shocking for us to learn about their plight.”

He added that the event would give him a chance to shoot videos which can be used for promotional purposes of world peace.

“It was also a great chance to shoot some good cultural videos and network with like-minded people,”

Khalfan said.

Maskari, a senior coordinator of snk said,

The main idea of the event was to create awareness on peace and to stop war irrespective of country and community. Everyone was united under one banner to stop war and wanted to send a clear message to the UN.

It is youth who are suffering in many parts of the world and as youth we must do everything to stop this menace. This was the lesson that we had from the event. More than 50 countries took part.”

IPYG started out as a group of young people in Korea in May 2013 and the main interest was to spread the message of peace around the world.

The purpose of IPYG meeting is to create positive and lasting change internationally through uniting major youth associations around the world.

The organisation invites young people owning SMEs to be part of the event and align with them for future endeavours. Khalfan and Maskari are planning to make short videos on Oman to promote peace.

Temple on diwali : lighting lamps 'diyas'
Diwali or Deepavali is one of the most prominent and famous Hindu festivals of India, celebrated with great gusto and fervor. In Sanskrit, word ‘Deepavali’ means “rows of lights” so this festival is also known as “Festival of Lights”. Diwali festival starts with Dhanteras, followed by small Diwali and then main Diwali. People of all religion enjoy this festival by making vibrant rangolis, lighting lamps 'diyas', distributing sweets, exchanging gifts between friends and relatives and burning crackers. This festival of lights transcends religion and is unanimously celebrated by Indians worldwide.

The festival is celebrated with great fervour and joy as it marks the victory of good over evil, after the vanquishing of King Ravana of Lanka at the hands of Lord Rama and the return of the Suryavanshi King Lord Rama to his Ayodhya! Fables say that originally when the trio had returned to Ayodhya, the people of Ayodhya had lit the entire state with lamps to welcome their Lord’s visit after 14 years exile. It was like a long awaited end to a sad tale and the beginning of a new era of happiness and peace.

On the night of Deepavali, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi puja has been performed everywhere in India to invoke their blessings for one’s well-being and growth. People get the blessing of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi in the form of health, wealth, prosperity and happiness.
Apart from this, Deepawali also has a deeper significance in Jainism as on this special day, Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankar of this era, got Nirvana at Pavapuri, and therefore they celebrate it referring to it as Deva Devali.
