Mayor Marty Walsh joined former Mayor Ray Flynn and longtime community advocate Mel King on March 21 to launch the Boston Peace and Democracy Discussions

The Boston Peace and Democracy Discussions are designed to engage children in discussions with family members, teachers, librarians, police officers, street workers, nurses, doctors and clergy members about how to combat violence and create a more peaceful and democratic city and country. Peace and Democracy e-books and digital games that encompass multicultural literature, activities and curriculum will enhance the discussions.

"This partnership further enhances our commitment to providing our young people with the tools they need to combat violence in their own communities,"

 

said Walsh.

 

"I thank Ray Flynn and Mel King for supporting this effort, which will help to better serve our children and families by talking about these very important issues."
 

The first Peace and Democracy Discussion will be supported with "It Doesn't Have to Be This Way: A Barrio Story" ("No tiene que ser asi: una historia Del barrio"), written by Luis J. Rodriguez, a book about a Latino boy who is being pressured to join a local gang and learns to overcome his troubles.

After reading and discussing this story about gangs and violence in one neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, students and participating adults will discuss their points of view about how violence in their city and community can be prevented.

Based on feedback from this launch, a prototype will be provided for free to select schools and educational organizations in Boston who serve grades 4-5. By September 2017, the program's goal is to provide one e-book per grade level for all grade levels, encompassing pre-K to 12th grade, focusing on violence prevention. Future Boston Peace and Democracy Discussions will focus on discrimination and income inequality.

The first Peace and Democracy Discussion will be held at the Julia Butler Family Center, located at the Boston Housing Authority's Lenox/Camden development in Lower Roxbury.

 

In addition, Center staff will participate in the discussions with area youth. The Center was recently renovated and provides after school programming for community youth and their families. The Center is currently operated through a new partnership between Vibrant Boston, the Black Ministerial Alliance and the BHA.

The Boston Peace and Democracy Advisory Board is in the process of reaching out to potential supporters and partners. King is the honorary chairperson of the board and was just recently joined on the board by Flynn.

The first yearly Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) held on March, 14, when 1800 participants gathered in Seoul for Advocacy of International Law for Peace​. Faced with the reality of uncertainty in global cooperation, triggered by a chain of political upheavals from the Brexit to elections in the United States and European states, a new approach to pursue an international peaceful order was discussed.

 

In commemoration of the DPCW proclaimed on the same date in 2016, the forum reaffirmed the importance of global peace movement currently on progress under the Legislate Peace Campaign to establish the principle of international law for peace through the introduction of a UN resolution based on the DPCW.

 

Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL emphasized that peace building

“is not an individual task,” but “is relevant to everyone”

as a common purpose of the global community. He offered the role of religion as a bridge builder of peace, rather than the core of conflict and violence by adding

“our orientations must be one for peace. Whether religious, secular world, there is no exception.”

 

In the progress report, Dong Min Im, the secretary general of HWPL, explained the significance of peace projects in HWPL by saying,

“The work is to put an end to war in our globe and make a foundation of a world of everlasting peace, which is unprecedented in history.”

He continued,

“The solution to peace is all of us becoming messengers of peace.”
 

Bup Hye Kim, chairman of Buddhist Central Council for National Unification, offered a picture of concrete action plans of HWPL in achieving peace.

“Youth and women are the main scapegoats in war, but even in this reality we must face the fact that youth and women are voluntarily standing at the forefront to build the foundation of peace with HWPL,”

he said.

'Beauty and the Beast' Soundtrack

Heading for Top 5 Debut on Billboard 200

The soundtrack of the new Beauty and the Beast film is heading for a top five debut on next week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters.

Prognosticators suggest the set, which was released March 10 through Walt Disney Records, may earn around 50,000 to 55,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 16.

The new movie is a live-action adaptation of Disney’s classic animated film of the same name, which was released in 1991. The redux’s soundtrack features the cast’s recordings of the film’s songs like “Be Our Guest,” “Belle” and the title cut. It also boasts contributions from Ariana Grande, John Legend, Josh Groban and Celine Dion.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new April 1, 2017-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Beauty and the Beast will debut) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, March 19.

If the new Beauty and the Beast soundtrack bows in the top five, it will easily surpass the No. 19 peak of the animated film’s companion album.

The latter set debuted at No. 146 on the chart dated Dec. 7, 1991, and eventually peaked at No. 19 on the April 18, 1992-dated tally. The set spent 76 weeks on the list and has sold 2.3 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music.

It’s likely that Ed Sheeran’s current No. 1, ÷ (Divide), will hold atop the list for a second week, with around 150,000 units. Metallica’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct could nab the runner-up slot for a second straight frame, as the set continues to rack up sales generated by a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion. Hardwired may draw 95,000 units in the week ending March 16.

As for the rest of the top 10, it appears the Beauty and the Beast soundtrack could be the only debut in the region. The next highest bows will likely be The Shins’ Heartworms and Josh Turner’s Deep South, which could both launch somewhere in the top 25.
